The concepts of being and order are the basic notions in all and every philosophical reflection and investigation into reality. The intention of this study is to examine the mutual relationships between order and being as found in the philosophy of Thomas Aquinas, but against the background of the age-old dispute regarding the unity and plurality of being(s) as initiated by Heraclitus and Parmenides, and developped by Plato and Aristotle, Duns Scotus and Ockham, Descartes and some contemporary metaphysicians, e.g. Heidegger (...) and Whitehead. Wolicka's book on Being and Sign, which deals with semiotics of John of St. Thomas, can serve as a typical model of the approach to the Thomistic philosophy as it is practiced by the KUL's School of Philosophy, namely, "in its close cooperation between the chairs of metaphysics, history of philosophy, and methodology of science." Following the tradition of KUL's school of philosophy, the author treats "the problematics of signs as a typical boundary problem which contains several different theoretical points (...) of view, and especially the metaphysical, noetic and logical one.". This paper is concerned with n-localization property introduced by Newelski and Rosłanowski in [10] and getting it for CS iterations of forcing notions.

We examine some extensions of the constructive propositional logic with strong negation in the setting of varieties of $\mathcal{N}$ -lattices. The main aim of the paper is to give a description of all pretabular, primitive and preprimitive varieties of $\mathcal{N}$ -lattices.

The main aim of the present paper is to explain a nature of relationships exist between Nelson and Heyting algebras. In the realization, a topological duality theory of Heyting and Nelson algebras based on the topological duality theory of Priestley for bounded distributive lattices are applied. The general method of construction of spaces dual to Nelson algebras from a given dual space to Heyting algebra is described. The algebraic counterpart of this construction being a generalization of the Fidel-Vakarelov construction is (...) also given. These results are applied to compare the equational category N of Nelson algebras and some its subcategories with the equational category H of Heyting algebras. Pietruszczak (Bull Sect Log 38(3/4):163–171, 2009) proved that the normal logics K45 , KB4 (=KB5), KD45 are determined by suitable classes of simplified Kripke frames of the form ⟨W,A⟩ , where A⊆W. In this paper, we extend this result. Firstly, we show that a modal logic is determined by a class composed of simplified frames if and only if it is a normal extension of K45. Furthermore, a modal logic is a normal extension of K45 (resp. KD45; KB4; S5) if (...) and only if it is determined by a set consisting of finite simplified frames (resp. such frames with A≠∅; such frames with A=W or A=∅; such frames with A=W). Secondly, for all normal extensions of K45, KB4, KD45 and S5, in particular for extensions obtained by adding the so-called “verum” axiom, Segerberg’s formulas and/or their T-versions, we prove certain versions of Nagle’s Fact (J Symbol Log 46(2):319–328, 1981) (which concerned normal extensions of K5). Thirdly, we show that these extensions are determined by certain classes of finite simplified frames generated by finite subsets of the set N of natural numbers. In the case of extensions with Segerberg’s formulas and/or their T-versions these classes are generated by certain finite subsets of N. (shrink)

Academic dishonesty has serious consequences for human lives, social values, and economy. The main aim of the study was to explore a model of relations between personal and cultural variables and academic dishonesty. The participants in the study were N = 2,586 individuals from nine countries (Pakistan, Israel, Italy, India, the USA, Peru, Romania, Ghana, and Poland). The authors administered the Academic Dishonesty Scale to measure academic dishonesty, the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale to measure distress, the Almost Perfect Scale – (...) Revised to measure perfectionism, the Brief Self-Control Scale to measure self-control, and the Singelis Scale to measure independent self-construal. The results showed that the theoretical model was well fitted to the dataset in six countries: Pakistan, the United States, Romania, Ghana, Israel, and Poland. However, it was not well fitted in Italy, India, and Peru. Our results also showed that perfectionism significantly predicted academic dishonesty, but not in all countries. Self-control significantly predicted cheating, falsification, and plagiarism in the USA. Moreover, we found that distress was related to cheating o0nly in Ghana. Finally, independent self-construal predicted academic dishonesty. Our findings provide a cross-cultural contribution to the debate on academic dishonesty by highlighting its significant predictors and may inform interventions aimed at eliminating it. Our results can be used in preventing and curbing academic dishonesty. Knowledge on cross-cultural differences can be useful in international education for example, as an indicator accepting or relaxing attitude toward academic dishonesty in students from different countries. In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:BOOK REVIEWS 151 highly conscientious translator, and a sign of this are the Latin-English and English-Latin glossaries that are appended at the end of the work. The glossaries show how he has tried to remain consistent in his choice of terms and how he decided to render difficult terms like ratio and esse, which cause every translator of Aquinas problems. One could complain, however, that these nine pages of (...) glossary are not quite complete enough. A few missing entries, for example, are ' individual ' (which is used to translate concretum, suppositum, individuatum, and particufuris), ' subiectum ' (translated " substance " and " subject "), and' modus'. The briefest of bibliographical notes and an index complete the work. Here one might want to register a more serious complaint. The bibliographical note is much too brief to he especially helpful. The beginner could use some more suggestions about what to read as a follow-up to Martin's hook. All in all, this is a collection of readings from Thomas Aquinas one would like to see stay in print for a long time to come. Many who teach the thought of Aquinas in the round will want to make use of this work. And, by reading this work, philosophy students to whom Aquinas is an unknown will make a good beginning in becoming di· rectly familiar with one of the greatest of minds. ROBERT D. New York: Peter Lang, 1990. Pp. 309 + xiv. This first volume bodes well for the new series Catholic Thought from Lublin, because the author of the hook is also the general editor of the series. Father Woznicki has here produced a welcome addition to those worthwhile hooks exploring the philosophical vision of St. Thomas in depth and comparing and contrasting that vision with other philosophical outlooks. Such studies are important not just for Thomists hut for all who are interested in the thought of the Angelic Doctor. On the first page of his Foreword, Woznicki announces that being and order are so inextricably interrelated that it is absolutely impos· sihle to understand one without the other. With thorough scholarship and impressive depth, Woznicki hacks up his claim. The Foreword also includes Etienne Gilson's marvelous statement: "Metaphysics al- 152 BOOK REVIEWS ways buries its undertakers." Not only does Woznicki probe profoundly into St. Thomas's metaphysics but he shows with an enviable clarity what is metaphysically lacking in philosophies as diverse as those of Duns Scotus, William of Ockham, Descartes, Kant, and Whitehead. Woznicki's goal in this well documented study is to discover the order present in the very structure of being as being. In examining the concept of being itself, he claims that being can reveal itself in its inner disposition of both essential and existential characteristics only as something in which essence and existence are related to each other reciprocally and mutually. The Lublin Thomist distinguishes the predicamental and the transcendental modes of predication. While in the predicamental mode of predication a predicate is added to a being as its determining principle, in the transcendental mode of predication nothing can be added to a being as an extraneous nature, in the way that an accident is added to a substance or that a difference is added to a genus. (These additions cannot take place because every nature is essentially being.) The distinction between the two modes of predication permit the formulation of two kinds of concepts, namely, the predicamental and the transcendental. The former describe various grades of being which match different modes of being and so reveal.the various genera of being; the latter in depicting being in its universality express more clearly what is contained in the nature of being as such. A predicamental order of being is established through the predicamental concepts' description of being by its essential characteristics ; a transcendental order of being is established through the transcendental concepts' description of being as expressed by the existential characteristics of esse. Milestones was a manifesto of rightwing, anti-revolutionary liberalism, according to which the political events of 1905 should have officially concluded the intelligentsia’s battle against autocracy and inaugurated the intelligentsia’s cooperation with Russia’s “historical rulers” to turn the country into an economically and culturally strong “state of law.” All the Milestones ’ authors agreed that Russia’s intellectual history was not identical with the traditions of the radical intelligentsia, and that there was need for a new intellectual canon focused on religious thought (...) and efforts to define the Russian national identity. Résumé Cet article met en cause l’idée de John Gray selon laquelle la conception moderne de l’homme est commune à toutes les variantes de la tradition libérale. En raison notamment de son aspiration universaliste, et des notions de Raison neutre et de nature humaine qu’implique cette conception, il propose en revanche une version du libéralisme qui ne saurait être « classique », mais plutôt « post-moderne » ou « communautaire ». Il s’agit d’un libéralisme qui n’émet aucune réserve vis-à- vis (...) de la communauté en tant que telle et n’exige de celle-ci que le respect du droit des individus à faire leurs propres choix de façon autonome, morale et compréhensive. Dans ce sens on peut dire que le libéralisme post-moderne refuse les préjugés sociaux tout en restant fidèle à l’individualisme qui, en partant du social et du commun, arrive à ce qui est effectivement individuel. La question est de savoir revitaliser le sens et la signification de l’humanisme en tant que projet permettant aux êtres humains de construire leurs vies dans un milieu politique et social, en toute liberté mais dans un équilibre de justice et la solidarité. Les décrets en l'honneur de Diodoros Pasparos de Pergame, riches en informations sur les relations entre un grand bienfaiteur et sa cité, ont souvent attiré l'attention des chercheurs. En évoquant les honneurs exceptionnels accordés à Diodoros, on a souligné, à juste titre, que ces textes accusent les traits significatifs de la « basse » époque hellénistique. On pourrait aussi remarquer que leur nombre même témoigne de l'ostentation avec laquelle les Pergaméniens voulaient louer Diodoros. Cependant, la chronologie relative de ces décrets (...) et leurs rapports réciproques n'ont pas été établis de façon convaincante. Le classement proposé dans le présent article, d'une part, permet de mieux comprendre l'activité de gymnasiarque de Diodoros, d'autre part, jette quelque lumière sur la procédure législative en vigueur dans la cité de Pergame, dans la première moitié du Ier s. avant J.-C. On constate que la cité fonctionne comme une cité démocratique et la procédure législative en vigueur est la même qu'à l'époque attalide. Le rôle joué par les stratèges ne prive pas les citoyens particuliers du droit d'initiative législative, seulement cette initiative doit passer toujours par l'intermédiaire des stratèges, chargés de la mise en délibération (sans doute aussi de la rédaction) des projets de décrets.
